A good question that comes up on many occasions, even many of my close friends who see me sitting here working away whenever I feel like it. They often ask me, ‘How can I start my own business?’ The response comes that you need an idea first for your own product. After a quick pondering look towards the sky, they turn back and reply, but I don't have my own products what can I sell?

Well, the simple answer is if you don't have your own product you're going to have a hard time selling anything, online or offline. There's so much raw promotion power that comes with having your own products. Look at it this way, without them, you can't joint venture, you can't have an army of affiliates promoting for you, you can't control the sales process and gain new knowledge through your research, you can't build up your resources for future promotion, in fact, there isn't much good to come out of not having your own product.

So make one. The longer time you spend looking around in your target market, the easier it will be to come up with ideas for your own product. I don't expect to plant this guide in front of a random person who thinks all we do is send e-mails out all day and scam people (which seems to be the usual joke when I mention to someone that I'm in online marketing) and then tell them to create a product out of the blue.

In much the same way, if this was literally your first day in the business I wouldn't expect you to be able to go out and create your own online marketing product. You need to have the knowledge first, even if you're not creating an info product. Once you've found yourself mingling with the crowd and getting down and buying products and talking to people, it's very rare that you can come out of a situation without coming up with a new idea, even out of the simplest of situations.

A good example of this is a conversation I had a couple of weeks ago with a fellow marketer. He'd just written a shed load of reports and wanted to do something a little special with them. Unfortunately he had to go through each one manually and do this by hand. We just could not find a piece of software to do this for him (Sorry, I can't tell you exactly what it is, because it sounded like that would be his next venture). But as you can see, just by living as an online marketer, it's real easy to come up with product ideas that are solutions to problems you might have.

How about revelations? I've had these too, not necessarily with online marketing, but when you're trying to figure out how to do something, and after a long while thinking, it comes to you, you try it out, and it works like a charm. That's valuable information you have there that could easily be sold. Remember that when you come to creating a product, it doesn't have to be a piece of furniture or something that costs hundreds of dollars to manufacture, it can be something as simple as information contained within your head that people will want to buy, or a piece of software, that also generally has low overheads, as you can pay someone to complete the build and then go off and sell it.

The choices really are endless, and the more ideas you come up with, the more ideas those ideas will spawn. It only takes one idea to create a five or six product venture that could last you a whole year. Whatever you do though, don't skip over this. Don't say ah well, I'll just promote other peoples stuff, because you'll find yourself in the same position this time next year going about things like that. It's all about creating products that allow you to build your resources, and starting out not creating your own, is out of the question.

Even the smallest patio, balcony, courtyard, roof terrace or porch can boast a crop of vegetables or a garden of flowers, all achievable by planting them into containers. In larger gardens they may be used to enliven dull spots in borders, as eye-catchers to close vistas, as pointers around the garden, to draw attention to a particular area or simply as decorative ornaments. Planted containers are useful to mark an entrance, such as either side of a doorway or positioned on gate piers, to furnish a terrace, patio or outside sitting or eating area, to line a pathway as a means of introducing a note of formality.

There is hardly anything, which cannot be grown in a pot – including trees and shrubs. Container planting allows tender plants to be moved to shelter for winter protection. A greenhouse, conservatory or even frost-free garage can be used to protect them in the colder months. Containers which must stay out of doors all the time can be separately planted for winter and summer, or have a permanent colony of staple plants to which seasonal extras are added. When used in groups, pots in varying sizes and heights look best, this works well especially in small areas such as a courtyard or terrace where the illusion of a lush garden is desired. Once the plants are growing well, producing lots of foliage and flowers, many of the containers will not be visible, creating the visual effect of well-stocked borders.

At first sight creating a green paradise out of a few square yards of empty space may seem a daunting prospect, but with imagination and some know-how even the most unpromising gloomy corner can be transformed into a delightful garden area, offering a place of repose amid the bustle of daily life. A small terrace can be given a warm and intimate character with brightly coloured plants.

Climbers planted in pots from which they are able to scrambling up walls, and wall fixed planters containing cascading plants will decorate the plainest of facades. Planter boxes, urns, wooden barrels, hanging baskets and large flowerpots are just some of the containers that can be used. The container gardener is limited only by his imagination. Consider the following guidelines when choosing your container. Avoid containers with narrow necks.

Cheap plastic pots may deteriorate in UV sunlight and terracotta pots dry out rapidly. Glazed ceramic pots are excellent choices but make sure your pot has adequate drainage. Holes should be 1/2 inch across. Line the base of the pot to prevent soil loss. The best medium for this is polystyrene chips, these do not add weight to the pot, important if you intend to move the pots around, or are to be sited on a roof garden or balcony. Filling deep containers with a good depth of the chips avoids the need to add more compost than is necessary for those shallow rooting plants; it also reduces the over-all weight.

Wooden containers are susceptible to rot. Redwood and cedar are relatively rot resistant and can be used without staining or painting. Avoid wood treated with compounds such as creosote, these are toxic and can damage the plants. One advantage of wooden containers is that they can be built to sizes and shapes that suit the location.

Remember that small pots restrict the root area and dry out very quickly. The size and number of plants to be grown will determine the size of the containers used.

The Houston Museum of Natural Science (HMNS) was one chosen to showcase the world-famous Exhibition for the Lord of the Rings Trilogy.

HMNS quickly realized that while the exhibit was expected to generate a great deal of interest, it didn't have a lot of appeal for their core audience. The success of the exhibition, therefore, would rest in how it was marketed.

The Houston Museum of Natural Science quickly called in Spur Digital to help reach the targeted demographic audience and generate interest in the Exhibit. HMNS was, also, hoping to acquire new patrons and members to further their future revenue.

Spur digital worked with HMNS to identify the target market for the campaign and developed an integrated online media plan to reach those audiences.

The campaign featured an online contest that was marketed through targeted online media outlets including relevant Web sites, Search Engines and third party E-mail lists. Viral marketing was an important component of the campaign, so Spur developed an innovative strategy to get people to refer their friends.

Spur identified the target audience as males 18 to 34 years old who were fans of action and fantasy films, frequent video game players and movie renters, tech-sawy who generally didn't hang out at museums.

Based on this information, Spur chose search engine advertisements that would accompany specific search words, dedicated e-mail advertisements, sponsored e-mail advertisements, banner ads on web sites targeted toward the desired audience, and e-mails to the HMNS list.

Did it work? You bet! The results were excellent.

The impact of the viral marketing effort was astounding - over 23% of registrants came originated from the Tell-A-Friend feature.

The direct marketing efforts yielded impressive results as well. In total, the 12 week, locally-targeted online campaign yielded more than 2 million targeted impressions, 40,000 unique visits, almost 12,000 and 6,000 invitations sent by friends at a cost per action of less than $3.00. These contributed to the record attendance of almost 100,000 over 3 months.

Apple Cider Pie

3/4 cup Apple Cider or Apple Juice
1/2 cup Dates or Raisins (chop and pit dates)
1 Tbs. Cornstarch
1/2 tsp. Ground Ginger
1/2 tsp. Lemon Rind, grated
2 prepared or homemade Pie Crusts
1/2 cup Granulated Sugar
1 Tbs. All-purpose Flour
5 cups Tart Baking Apples, peeled and thinly sliced
Extra sugar and cinnamon (optional)

Preheat the oven to 375º F degrees.

In a small saucepan, stir together the apple cider, dates or raisins, cornstarch, ginger, and lemon rind. Bring the mixture to a boil over moderate heat, stirring constantly. Cook for about 2 minutes or until mixture is thickened, making sure to stir constantly. Remove from heat; set aside.

Line a 9-inch pie tin with 1 of the pie crusts. Neatly trim the crust even with edge of pie tin.

In a large bowl, stir together the sugar and flour. Add the apples and toss until the apples are well coated. Spoon the apple mixture into the prepared crust. Spoon cider mixture over apple mixture.

Cut small slits in the remaining pie crust and place on top of cider and apple filling. Trim the top crust to 1/2 inch beyond edge of the pie tin. Fold the top crust under the bottom crust and crimp the edge.

Sprinkle the top with a little granulated sugar and a dash of cinnamon, if so desired. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes, or until apples are tender and crust is golden. Remember, if the edge of the crust browns too quickly, simply cover the rim with foil to even out the browning while baking.

Remove the pie from the oven and cool on a wire rack for 2 hours before serving.
