If you have your employees take training on business ethics, will they think that there is something wrong with the company that they had to implement a business ethics program? Customers may think the same thing.

It’s similar to asking for a lawyer when being detained at a police station. The police want to know why you are “lawyering up.” You must be guilty of whatever it is they are questioning you about. What is it that you are hiding that you need legal representation? Some people, especially those with enough money, will seek legal council anytime they have to deal with law enforcement. This is what they pay their lawyers to handle.

As for your company, could they be hiding something that you are not aware of? If you know about a potential company requiring ethics train-ing, would this make you stay away?

A more likely scenario within the next 15-20 years is that most companies are going to require this type of training. Too many people are trigger happy when it comes to lawsuits, so companies are taking measures to re-duce the possibility of these suits from happening. If this likely scenario comes to fruition, customers and employees will become less cynical or suspicious.

It’s already happening with larger corporations. Since they employ a fair amount of people, these people are becoming conditioned to this training and won’t be so critical further down the line. In fact, any of these peo-ple who decide to move on from these corporations to start their own businesses will be more likely to set up their own programs when their or-ganization becomes large enough.

Employees are not fond of having to sit through the training. It’s a boring subject matter and usually, lasts for at least an hour. The good news is that most of the training is via computer so employees can work at their own pace to break up the monotony. They usually have a deadline when they have to complete it and unfortunately for them, they wait until the last day and have to take the whole training in one sitting. But, they manage to muddle through it.

Even though it is common sense, not too many people get excited with this type of training. However, it can open your eyes as to how to be more ethical in your business dealings as well as with your colleagues and managers.

Business Ethics in the Banking Industry

This topic may appear to be an oxymoron. There doesn’t seem to be any ethics in banking these days. Bankers used to have this pristine and al-most sacrosanct reputation. They were the guardians of money and the preservers of the goodwill of the people. This doesn’t seem to be the case anymore.

Then again, the industry always seems to be tangled in corruption in some form or another. A look through history shows bank failures, market crashes, etc. In each instance, you’ll find the government had a role in helping the banks shoot themselves in the proverbial foot.

Consider the most recent banking scandal of 2008. Banks got mixed up in complicated derivative products that became a game of hot potato. But before you go blaming the banks outright, keep in mind that the govern-ment required banks to take on more subprime, a.k.a., risky loans. Banks needed a way to offload these loans. So, they put pressure on the govern-ment to relax the Glass-Steagall Act. This was the act passed after the stock market crash of 1929 that prevented banks from investing. It was actually one of the few acts Congress got right.

But, it’s unfair to force banks to take on these risky loans without some way of hedging. Congress lifted the restrictions of the Glass-Steagall Act, and banks were once again allowed to invest. If the banks stuck with sim-ple hedges, they probably would have made it through unscathed. How-ever, they started getting greedy and came up with all kinds of crazy de-rivative schemes that no one understood. They just paid out high rates, until they couldn’t anymore. When the well dried up, people started to panic.

Yet, the government stepped in like they always do and pointed fingers at all the various players except themselves. They started introducing overly restrictive regulations which forces banks to hire teams of consultants just to make sense of the new rules.

It’s not clear how the regulations will affect the banks over the long term. The smaller banks don’t have the same monetary resources to ad-here to the regulations and gives larger banks a competitive advantage. Already, smaller banks are being consolidated and acquired by the bigger banks, which reduces competition. That’s never good for consumers. The government doesn’t seem to be overly concerned with this issue. Could it be that it is by design? It’s a long-standing feeling with consumers that the large banks and government are in this together.

Can Business Ethics Be Taught?

Companies are made up of people that run them and work in them. Peo-ple who remain ethical in their business will never have to worry about doing something wrong. However, there are people who don’t have the best intentions of companies at heart. These could even be people who have had training (both in school and at work). The question becomes, can business ethics be taught?

The answer probably depends on each individual. If someone is taught ethics but decides to act in unethical ways, they either don’t believe in ethical behavior, or they think about it in terms of degree. It may be bad to get involved with insider trading, but stealing some supplies may be fair game. Then again, the bad behavior usually starts with small acts and people work up when they don’t get caught early on.
There is also indirect ethics (or lack thereof) where people see others do-ing something that is not on the level. They look the other way. Training in ethics would have you report the behavior. Again, for some people, it becomes a matter of degree. People also don't want to be labeled as a snitch, so it's often easier to simply look the other way.

Modern laws are making it more difficult for these indirect people to keep quiet. If they find out that you knew about a certain behavior, you can be brought up on legal charges as an accomplice. Of course, small in-cidents are not going to warrant the attention of law enforcement. They don’t have the time or the resources to handle those. The company will simply bring disciplinary actions against the people involved. But, if the incidents are big enough, it could bring about legal actions. This is not only expensive but may cost you your job and most likely some jail time.

For starters, internet marketing can mean having your own business that you take great pride in. This way, I only ever have to work two days in a row and I have a day of complete freedom when everyone else is at work. This allows me to run personal errands (banks and hair dressers are empty) and to enjoy being able to play computer games or go on nice walks without any social commitments either! More importantly, it allows me to work on my own projects. To work ‘on’ my business rather than ‘in’ it, so that I always feel a sense of forward momentum and so that I’m always progressing the business.

This freedom also affords you a range of other options. If you are worried about the health implications of a job that involves just sitting down all day for instance, then you can get around this issue by making sure you go to the gym every morning before you start work.

Better yet, you now also have the freedom to work wherever you want. How about becoming a digital nomad and working on the move? You can see the world while working out of small cafes and bars along the beaches. Alternatively, you might decide you like your creature comforts too much and decide to create an awesome home office that you can be highly productive in.

If you take this to the absolute extreme, then you can find ways to streamline your business or to get it to run itself. That way, you can earn a purely passive income, meaning that you’ll earn money even when you’re sleeping or up in the air flying to your destination. Imagine waking up the next day richer?

You probably know you’re overworked and you probably know that you should drop the clients you have. You’re probably well aware that there are likely to be higher paying clients out there who could help you to earn more while working less! But if you’ve been too afraid to drop or negotiate with your current clients until now, chances are that you aren’t about to change any time soon.

So we need a solution and that solution is to look at the way you are handling your current work load. Because I’m willing to take a bet that you could be more effective and more efficient. If you’re currently starting work at 1pm or even 10am, then you are wasting hours of your day. Likewise, you may well be struggling with things like procrastination or distractions. Perhaps you find yourself constantly interrupted by phone calls, or struggling to stop playing Doom every morning for the first few hours before you do anything useful.

Likewise, there’s a good chance that the right technology or even a change in the way you present yourself could help you to get a bit more done. And that will buy us the time we need in the short run to start implementing change.

There’s no doubt about it. Optimizing pages to satisfy search engines can be a tedious and demanding task. Not just initially, but throughout the duration of any website being live on the web.

Basically, your search engine optimization never ends.

You strive for high page rank. That can mean an actual score like the one Google assigns to individual web pages or merely a conceptual rating that provides your website with more search engine recognition and stature than other sites in your area of interest.

Either way, the goal is to make your website more popular, more visible, more important than all the competition.

You might not reach the top of the heap, but that’s where you have to aim in orderto land anywhere near the top.

Not that you can’t reach the very top. You can. It’s just not necessary in order to reap all the benefits -at least, from a strictly search engine perspective.

Let’s face it. If you land in the top three positions (or even on the first page) of search results, you’ll most likely capture the same amount of traffic that the number one website enjoys. Maybe even more.

It all depends on your description. Or should we say, the description that a search engine displays in your listing -since meta description tags are rarely used anymore.

If your description more closely matches what a viewer is searching for, they’ll go to your website first. Regardless of what results position you happen to be in.

And even if they don’t go there first, they’ll most likely get there eventually. Unless, of course, one of the other websites has totally and completely satisfied their needs and they don’t feel compelled to continue their search.

The point is, it’s not entirely about what positionyou gain in search engine results. It’s about targeting a specific keyword (search term) and then making certain you accomplish these two things…

1. Your website ranks high for that keyword.
2. Your website can deliver viewer expectation for that keyword.

Of course, delivering the viewer’s expectation is fairly straightforward.

If the search term is “improve golf swing”, it’s a pretty safe bet the viewer is looking for something to improve their golf swing. As long as you provide information or a product (or both) that can
satisfy that need, you’re in excellent striking distance.

Covering the first accomplishment -getting a high rank for your website -is a whole lot more involved.

It’s not just about satisfying a specific viewer need. Instead, it’s all about convincing a search engine that your website is superior with regard to satisfying a specific viewer need. For example…

There are over two million web pages associated with improving one’s golf swing. Some contain information, some contain products. Some contain nothing more valuable than a brief mention of the search term.

Regardless, there are millions of pages that show up in the search results total when a viewer types in “improve golf swing” (approximately 50,000 results if you put quotes around it, which the majority of searchers don‘t include).

All you have to do is dive into that vast ocean of search results and somehow manage to dog-paddle your web page past all the other possibilities and onto the sandy beach. Where only a few top ranked pages are currently basking in the sun.

The only question is, how do you accomplish that? How do you wind up in front of all those other web pages?

You start by analyzing each of those top ranked pages. You sift through their source code, their web content, their design techniques. Whatever it takes to find out exactly what they’re doing that placed them in the top results positions.

And then you do the same thing. Only better. And you keep doing it until you reach your ultimate goal.

That goal might just be the number one position. Or maybe it’s getting listed in the top three. Or maybe you’re willing to settle for any position on the first page of search results.

It doesn’t really matter.

Whatever goal you’ve set, whatever position you’re shooting for, you level your sights on the top ranked web pages and then do everything they’re doing and more.

Of course, if you’re targeting a less sought-after search term, you won’t have to work nearly as hard. And that’s why so many savvy webmasters do just that…

They deliberately seek out search terms that are valuable to their particular niche, but don’t have nearly the amount of competition associated with them.

That way, simply implementing the basic optimization techniques will most often ensure them a top position in search results for any one of those keywords.

Of course, you have to know which optimization techniques work for which search engines or directories. They’re all different. They all set their own criteria for what elements are most important.

Some put the greatest emphasis on link popularity. Others place a good deal more value on the count and density of a specific keyword on individual web pages. Still others are more interested in seeing a basic theme or topic carried throughout the entire website.

Fortunately, if you limit your optimization efforts to satisfying the top players -Google, Yahoo, MSN, and Open Directory (DMOZ) -you can cover the most important SEO bases simultaneously.

For example, even though having the keyword in yourpage title might not carry a great deal of weight with Yahoo, it’s an absolute must when it comes to satisfying Google. So put your keyword in the title.

Although DMOZ doesn’t care so much about links pointing to your page from other websites, Google, Yahoo, and MSN do place a considerable amount of value in how “popular” your page is.

And all of them want to see a fair amount of quality keyword-rich content and a solid topic or niche theme throughout.

By incorporating all of the most important optimization techniques -the ones that are unilaterally perceived as most valuable -you’ll find that you have automatically satisfied the top players.

And speaking of top players, Google is the one that you need to aim most of your time and energy toward. And to assist you in that regard, the majority of this particular report contains Google specific information.

Of course, that’s only half thebattle. The other half is getting the search engines and directories to actually index your pages.

In order to do that, you need to start at the beginning. And the beginning in this particular instance is developing and enhancing pages in such a way thatthe search engine crawlers will be impressed.

The overall search process is simple…

All the text content that search engine crawlers gather is stored and indexed. People conduct searches based on certain phrases (keywords). Whatever content possesses the most relevancy with regard to any given keyword will be placed in the top positions of the search results.

And since the title of the page and the text content generally carry the most weight -at least with regard to what search engine crawlers deem most relevant during their visits -it stands to reason that improvement in page rank and/or search results listing can most often be attributed to having individual and specific keywords properly incorporated into those two prime areas.

Of course, if keywords were the only basis for which page rank and position in search results were determined, optimizing web pages would be pretty much cut and dried…

pick a keyword > use it in your title and throughout your content > achieve high page rank and top position in search engine results

The problem is, there are so many variables that not only come into play but change on a regular basis, it can seem as though achieving solid and effective search engine optimization might never be possible.
Fortunately, it’s not only possible, it can be relatively painless as well. All you have to do is satisfy the top three requirements of pretty much all major search engines…

•provide quality content

•update content on a regular basis

•get numerous top-ranking websites to link back to your site

And the search engines and directories you should be trying to impress the most are the top four contenders…

Google
https://www.google.com
Yahoo
https://www.yahoo.com
MSN Search
https://search.msn.com
DMOZ (Open Directory)
https://dmoz.org

Beyond that, there are countless other search engines and directories like AltaVista, Ask Jeeves, and AllTheWeb.

Should you optimize for those as well, or simply level your sites on the major players and bypass all the search engines and directories below them? Not necessarily. You still want your pages listed in as many locations as possible. You just shouldn’t try to satisfy every one of them with regard to optimization.

Satisfy the top four contenders. Then, if you have the time and ambition to broaden the scope of your SEO efforts, do it. If not, don’t worry about the hundreds (or even thousands) ofother search engines and directories that exist.

You’re only human. And just meeting the optimization criteria of the top four is going to be challenging and energetic enough.

Of course, unless you plan to make search engine optimization your life‘s work, it’s not likely you’ll invest most of your energy in that one single area (even when restricted to the top four players). But you do need to invest a fair amount of quality effort.

And that basically equates to these two missions…

1. Get your pages indexed by major search engines.
2. Improve your page rank and position in search results.

In order to accomplish both of those, you need to carefully balance the line between good optimization techniques and the urge to take things a bit too far.

In other words, you need to make certain you carry out your two missions without stepping over the line into what’s commonly referred to as “black hat” search engine tactics.

That dark and evil territory would include things like…
