But when it comes to keyword SEO, quantity doesn’t always beatout quality. That mere trickle of viewers who respond to a certain “obscure” or less than competitive keyword might not be large in numbers but they’ll be extremely large with regard to how targeted they are.

•posting on discussion boards

•posting comments on blogs

For example…

If you place a post on a discussion board, it will remain there indefinitely. Along with your signature file and/or reference to a specific URL address.

If you write an article and submit it to directories, it will be available for as long as those directories are in existence. Along with a link back to whateverpage or pages you’ve chosen to mention within the article and resource box.

If you create a free distribution ebook or software utility, it can be distributed and passed around for as long as there’s a perceivable value. Along with advertising messages and links that lead to whatever you’re promoting as well as your primary website.

If you start your own affiliate program, you could have hundreds -if not thousands -of people promoting your products or services for you. Along with links back to a page on your main website.

And of course, each and every one of these methods would be driving targeted traffic on a regular and continuous basis. All because you set something in motion once.

Regardless of what methods you use, it’s always a good idea to implement the most powerful ones first. That would include keyword SEO, pay per click advertising, and writing and distributing your own articles.

Once you have those types of traffic generating methods solidly in place, start implementing the other methods. As many as you feel comfortable with.

But don’t stop at any point and time. Whenever you have the time to do so, keep adding traffic generation methods as well as increasing the volume of those that are already in place.

That’s the way to ensure that you’ll not only receive a substantial amount of targeted traffic, you’ll be able to consistently raise the numbers. And like all aspects of marketing and promotion, the more targeted prospects you attract, the more income you’ll ultimately bring in.

Common advice to new marketers is to find a need and fill it. Better advice is to find a want and fill that, since people more readily spend money on things they want than they do on things they need. After all, no one NEEDS an expensive car. Even the cheapest of automobiles will get them where they want to go – yet people WANT the high end cars and they pay dearly for them.

So we know to find needs and wants and to fill them. And we've all been told to do surveys or haunt forums to find out what these needs and wants are. It's very basic advice and if you combine it with some trial and error, it will usually get the job done, at least to a certain degree.

But what if you want a blockbuster smash-it-out-of-the-park product?

Something that you can perhaps retire on?

Then you're going to have to upgrade your methods of product research and product creation. In fact, what you'll need to do is focus on something called Customer Development, and according to Steve Blank, it goes like this:

1. Understand your customers' problems and needs

2. Prove that you have a repeatable sales model (for long term sales and income)

3. Create and drive end user demand (also known as marketing)

4. Building – that is, transition from learning what your customers want to executing on what you've learned.

It's that first step - Understanding your customer's problems and needs – that sets the stage for the other 3 steps and your eventual long term success. And it's also the step most people get wrong.

You probably already have a vision for a new product. You've looked and needs and wants and you've got a solution you want to offer customers. The unseasoned marketer will now create the product and offer it to customers, something you might call the sink or swim method. But since 9 out of 10 products sink using this method, I'm going to suggest you do the following instead:

1. Go talk to the people who you believe are potential users for your product. Your goal is to see if there is a direct match between your product vision and what people want.

2. If you're finding out there isn't a match, you make one of two changes. Either you change your product to what these particular customers do want, or you find a different segment of the market that does want what you are planning to offer.

3. Your goal is to understand the problem your product is addressing. Ask people how they handle this problem now and if they perceive it as being a an important issue for them. Forget yes and no type questions.

Instead, ask open ended questions such as,

“If you could change anything about the way you deal with this problem, what would it be?”

“How do you currently solve this problem?”

“Can you describe the problem in your own words?”

“Have you tried other solutions? What happened?”

“What do you wish you could do to solve this problem?”

“Tell me about the last time you had this problem.”

“How much does this problem cost you?”

NOTE: Don't ask hypothetical questions because they won't be relevant or helpful. Don't ask for features, don't try to convince or sell and don't try to solve their problem. For example, don't ask:

“Do you like this idea?”

“Would you buy this?”

“How much would you pay for this?”

4. Adjust accordingly. You might uncover an even larger, more pressing problem that you can solve for these customers. Don't be afraid to discard a good idea for a great idea. In other words, don't chase after crumbs if turning in another direction will provide a feast.

5. Build, Measure and Learn, but not necessarily in that order. Figure out what you need to learn. For example, will people use your XYZ service if it's free. Then figure out how to measure that. In this case, you can track sign-ups for a beta service you will be introducing. Then you decide what you need to build. And in this case, all you need is a landing page to sign people up, with either a description or a video showing what your service will do.

If you've already got your own affiliate program, are you sending out a regular newsletter to your affiliates? The only reason not to is the extra time it takes. But here are the reasons why you do want to send your affiliates a newsletter on a regular basis:

You can address any questions that seem to come up regularly

You can update affiliates on any new policy changes, new tools they can use, etc.

You can update affiliates on new product offerings, new contests, etc.

By staying in touch you stay in their minds, thereby reminding them to promote your products

Here Are Some Tips To Help You Write Great Affiliate Newsletters:

Use subject lines that include keywords to get your emails opened, not just “Monthly Newsletter.” Your subject line should make it clear your newsletter is for affiliates (not consumers) and there is interesting stuff inside.

TIP: Beginning your newsletter with the highest commission paid for the previous week seems to generally work well at both getting the email opened and inspiring affiliates. Another good opener is, “Hello John, we're grateful you promote our products at website.com.” This reminds them of who you are and their connection to you. By the same token, using a salutation such as, “Hi Affiliate Team” provides the same benefit. ñ List your main topics at the beginning of the newsletter so they know what's inside. If you hide some of your topics down below, they won't be viewed by as many affiliates. But if you provide a bullet list and perhaps even hyperlink them to the appropriate areas of the newsletter, affiliates are more likely to find the information they want.

Give your affiliates plenty of advance notice of sales, coupons, codes, discounts they can offer, contests, discontinuations, etc.

Prior to launch, give affiliates your latest product for free so they can tell their traffic about it with authority.

Send your affiliate newsletter weekly, not monthly. Yes, affiliates do prefer to hear from you weekly as long as you have relevant information to share with them.

Unless you're in a high-tech industry, consider using plain old text for your emails. It loads faster on phones, it's less likely to get flagged as spam, and it's actually slightly more likely to get read by the recipient. But if you're in an industry that expects lots of flash such as high-tech, then do use HTML. Also if you want to display your product or your new banner, then of course use HTML. Best bet when you're uncertain? You already know the answer – TEST.

Ask your affiliates what they need to be successful. Don't send them a time robbing 20 minute survey. Instead, point them to your forum where you're asking them what they need, what they think, etc. Or conduct a very short poll. Keep communication on a 2-way street and you'll be astounded at the insights your affiliates sometimes give you. ñ Offer affiliates the chance to be on a special list for “flash” sales. These are sales of significant discounts that don't last long and sometimes come with little warning. Some affiliates who are more reactive will want to know about these and others won't because they prefer to plan their promotions well in advance.

Provide a call to action at the end of the newsletter. What do you want them to do? Call you for more info? Go to your webpage to get the codes for your new banners? Tell them what action they should take. ñ Always test your newsletter before you send it. Check for formatting errors, misspellings, inaccurate information, etc.

Include your contact information in every newsletter.

Depending on the network they use, you maybe able to search for your competitor's archive of affiliate newsletters and see what they've done in the past.

TIP: You might also sign up to be an affiliate for your competitor so you can receive their affiliate newsletters as they're sent out. Just an idea ;-)

How to Find New Affiliates (They Might Be Right Under Your Nose!)

If you have your own products, then you know one of your most valuable assets is your affiliate team. And adding another good affiliate is akin to adding money to your bank account.

If you don't yet have your own products, what's taking you so long? It's time to make a name for yourself by creating your own product. And once you do, unless you want to do all the product promotion yourself, you're going to want affiliates.
