Introduction: In February 2006, John Ritskowitz hosted a teleseminar with Michel Fortin, David Garfinkel, Yanik Silver, and JP Maroney. Entitled ?Million Dollar Roundtable,? it was a chance for these marketing pros to share some of their best secrets for marketing offline, which is something more online Marketers should be doing. Ideally we should all be marketing both offline and online.

Well these folks delivered the goods, and while the call lasted about 2 hours, it still wasn‘t enough time to get to everything (it never is, right?). So John compiled some of the ideas they talked about on the call, plus lots more ideas to cover the offline marketing spectrum.

Some of these ideas are more traditional, such as yellow pages advertising and classified ads. Of course that doesn‘t mean they should be neglected.

Other ideas are traditional, but not used as much, or I should say not always used as effectively as they could. Direct response marketing and publicity are two that come to mind.

And then there are really creative ideas that are often overlooked, such as valuable joint ventures and strategic alliances. Some of these ideas have the potential to really deliver a lot of leads and sales with minimal traditional “work.”

Part I – Traditional Offline Marketing

Don‘t think of these methods as too simple or mundane. They are very effective when done right and combined with other techniques in this report.

1) Classified Ads – This is something everyone should be testing in some form or another. It‘s great for lead generations. You should still have a strong benefit-driven headline and a clear call to action. Free reports work very well with classifieds. My local paper, the Hartford Courant even has an ongoing deal of 3 lines for 3 days – for free! Even adding more lines only ends up costing a few bucks. With a price like that, there‘s no reason anyone with a website should not be testing ways to draw traffic to the site with classifieds.

2) Direct Mail – Nothing beats direct response when it comes to results-driven proven advertising. And messages sent directly to your highly targeted market via direct mail can deliver a terrific return on investment (ROI) when tested properly. The internet can help you to live your dreams and to design the perfect lifestyle that will make you truly happy. Whether you have a small business that you want to turn into a big business, or whether you want to make money writing a blog on a topic you
love – internet marketing can do that for you.

As an internet marketer, you can make a truly ‘passive income’. That means earning a living by writing an amazing website once or creating a product once and then
letting the income roll in forever more. You can even do this as an affiliate marketer, by selling someone else’s product.

As an internet marketer you can earn a little money on the side, writing articles for other people.

The only problem? Most people have no idea where to begin with this.

When I tell a lot of people that I make money online, their response is often to look at me perplexed.

“What do you sell?”

“Well…. Nothing…”

“Where does the money come from?”

I actually had to promise my grandma that what I was doing wasn’t in any way illegal because she found it so hard to understand that I could make money without leaving the house!

My sister recently decided she no longer wanted to do her current job and that she’d like to start off online like me. She asked me how she could get started, what she needed to learn and what a good resource would be for her to begin.

And I was just kind of lost for words. Truth be told, there isn’t really a great resource out there for people just getting started. Truth be told, there is a huge amount of misunderstanding regarding what internet marketing is, what it’s capable of and how you should get started with it.

This is why you see so many businesses get it entirely wrong. Have you ever visited a business site, only to see that it looks completely unprofessional and cluttered? Have you ever visited a brand’s social media page to see that it hasn’t been updated in months? Or that what is there is just uninspired and unlikely to convince anyone to buy from them?

A lot of small businesses will recognize the power of the web to bring them money and customers but they won’t have any clue how to begin. Thus, they will often end up just hiring the first SEO (Search Engine Optimization) company they can find and hoping blindly that the company will maintain its side of the bargain and actually help them get to the top of Google.

Sometimes that happens. Other times, the company uses outdated, spammy techniques and the business goes bust.

Either that, or the company does nothing much and the small business just wastes a lot of money.

Chapter 1: The Challenge of Digital Marketing

Many of us got into digital marketing thinking it was going to improve our lives in major ways. You may even feel that you were ‘promised’ by internet marketing gurus that your life would suddenly be easy once you took up this line of work.

Digital marketing means working online and that in turn means working from anywhere, and without a boss. So of course, life will be easy! You can choose your own hours, you can work out of coffee shops or from beautiful locations…

And you can do it all your own way. Without someone breathing down your neck and shouting at you when you get things wrong.

What’s more, if you manage to achieve a ‘passive income’, then you’ll be earning money even while you sleep. Passive income means generating cash from a website, or a YouTube channel, or through affiliate sales. It means that even as you are resting, the seeds you sowed continue to reap their rewards.

So, you can take time off whenever you want.

And let’s not forget that during all this, you will be discussing things that matter to you. Things that you are passionate about. Things that you can’t wait to leap out of bed to start writing about.

That’s the dream of the digital marketer.

Dreamer, Meet Reality

The question you should be asking at this point though, is that if it is that easy, why isn’t everyone doing it?

The answer is that – of course – things are actually a fair bit more complicated.

Because most people don’t wake up one day with a website getting thousands of views a day and generating solid passive income. In fact, no one manages to do that.
Instead, it takes a lot of time. Likewise, it takes a lot of time to build a massive mailing list that you can use in order to make money from affiliate marketing emails. It takes a lot of time because it simply takes that long for a site to take off in a big way or for anyone to collect that many emails.

But likewise, it also takes that long simply to learn. You’ll start off with your internet marketing not really knowing what you’re doing. You’ll make mistakes. You’ll build a brand that you’ll be embarrassed of in retrospect.

And if you’re anything like the vast majority of today’s most successful internet entrepreneurs, then you’ll probably end up scrapping your first few businesses and trying again. Trust me: I work in the industry and I know some of the biggest players very well. None of them got it right the first time. They all floundered at first with non-starter ideas and brands. That will be you. Trust me.

And this is when running a business is not easy and is not fun. This is when digital marketing is hard.

You were told you would be able to give up your job and start working from home right away. You were promised the world. Instead, you’ve done nothing but work your socks off, stay up late and give up your free time… only for nothing to happen.

And that can be crushing.

What’s more, is that many internet entrepreneurs will never quite achieve passive income anyway. I consider myself an internet marketer and yet a large portion of what I do involves working for clients.

And let me tell you: if you work for clients then you might as well work for a boss! Even the nicest client in the world is going to expect you to honour your deadlines to at least some degree. Even the best gigs around will sometimes involve writing about topics you hate, or designing sites that you don’t massively approve of.
