Ah, joint ventures; another one of my favorite subjects, simply because this is how I carry out the majority of my marketing. I don't use search engines, never have, and probably never will.

I don't like basing my marketing on methods that come and go so quickly. The increasing numbers of rule-changes make for an unstable business in my eyes, at least it's something I'm not comfortable with.

Joint ventures however, have been going for hundreds of years as a form of trade. You scratch my back I'll scratch yours. It's about two or more people striving to make the other successful. It's not about to stop working after so long, which is why it's the safest bet.

Wheeling and dealing, a little bit of give and take, making new contacts every day, meeting new people, gaining a new perspective on the business world and my target market. I can't think of any longer lived or more effective method of promotion. What's more, it rarely costs anything but your time.

So I figured we'd start at the very beginning, and talk about how to find some joint venture prospects in the first place, the act of which can be rather complicated, time consuming and confusing if you're just starting out and have never performed a serious joint venture before.

What makes things even more scary for the first timer is, mess something up the first time around, and you may just find yourself stuck in a rut, where your previous prospects won't do business with you based on their previous experiences, word of mouth and what they remember about you.

So let’s make sure we get it right first time around. I suggest reading the whole of this section before getting started as each section bounces straight off the previous one. You're missing vital information if you don't read it all.

Ok first up, finding your prospects. I've seen so many laughable marketing guides that claim to know what they're talking about that give out advice such as go to Google, type in online marketing and start e-mailing all the site owners to try and get your hands on a profitable JV.

Now there's nothing wrong with this if you're not selling online marketing products, simply because in some cases, there are only very limited ways and means to get to your target market, and there may not be all that many lists already out there packed with potential customers. With online marketing products however, the people selling the products either know nothing at all, or are business savvy.

Chris – I think everyone was born with the skill. I think that basically if you can talk you can inject your personality into writing. It’s really easy. Chris – The quick run down on that product is it’s a huge collection of my articles, some published by big companies, many published to millions and millions as far as circulation through e-zines and websites.

Put your name on it, and then claim it as yours. Rob – How many articles can people get with it Chris? Do you constantly add articles to it?

Chris – Well, I think the initial package has about 20, a little over 20 in there, which were my most successful articles, but the big collection of articles that you see on my website, there’s a surprise bonus after you purchase that’s not advertised on the web page, that is a collection of about 200 more articles which you can do the same thing with.

Nowadays you hardly ever hear PHP mentioned without MySQL close behind. Why? Well, PHP and MySQL make a great pair for web application development efforts.

MySQL is often used in conjunction with PHP for the same reasons PHP is so popular - it is free, widely available, and most web hosts have it installed. There are other database systems that PHP works with, but MySQL seems to be the most common.

In this section, I’ll familiarize you with using MySQL to connect to a MySQL database and perform the basics. Advanced MySQL and it’s SQL language is a little beyond the scope of this book, so we won’t dive very far in to heavy details (I don’t want to lose you!). However, MySQL’s commands are written in almost-plain-english, and you can usually figure it out just by looking at it.

Your web host most likely has MySQL available for you, and they have simple ways to create databases. The two hosts that I have been using for years are pair Networks and Hostgator. Hostgator uses CPanel, and pair Networks uses a custom built control panel - both make it very easy to set up a database, and they provide the information you need to connect to it with.

After all, there are product authors who are successful in sales simply by creating an affiliate program for all affiliates to join and market his product for a commission.

Overall, resellers are usually more motivated than affiliates. Why? That is because a reseller has to invest an amount of money in acquiring a product with Resell Rights.
