These are common things that may throw you off your course. It’s only a partial list; naturally, you may likely add many other entries to it. There are likely 100s of potential “bumps” that may knock you off your course.

One crucial thing to point out is that, while a few of these bumps appear “good” or “worthwhile” (like commiserating with your unhappy acquaintance or doing the laundry), and some seem “foul” or “frivolous” (like playing Solitaire), they're all equally unacceptable from the viewpoint of beating your procrastination habit.

You'll need to learn to resist the urge to get absorbed into activities not on your schedule, regardless how crucial or virtuous they appear at the moment. The one exception, naturally, is emergencies, by which I mean actions that can’t be put off without significant harm to yourself or other people. However even with an emergency, after you’ve handled it, ask yourself whether it may have been prevented by finer planning, or whether somebody else could have handled it. If you’ve got a challenging goal, it's really crucial to learn to minimize the number of preventable emergencies in your life, and to learn to delegate as much as conceivable.

If it appears like I’m taking a hard line, I am. I have to, as procrastinators are frequently adept at rationalizing their diversions. Some of the examples of high-potassium fruits are bananas, peaches, oranges, honeydew and cantaloupe. Fiber in fruit helps to lower cholesterol and protect against heart disease. Strawberries and citrus are rich in vitamin C which is needed for growth and repair of tissues in all parts of your body.

Whole Grain

Eating more whole grains is an easy way to add a layer of " health insurance" to your life. Whole grains are better sources of fiber and other important nutrients, such as magnesium, selenium, potassium, protein, antioxidants, fiber, B vitamins, iron. Sticking to a healthy diet rich in whole grains can reduce the risk of blood coagulation, cholesterol levels and heart disease by lowering blood pressure.

Fiber is important for healthy bowel function and it helps reduce constipation and diverticulitis. B vitamins help the body release energy from carbohydrates, fat and protein. Iron is used to carry oxygen in the blood. Selenium is important for a healthy immune system and magnesium is a mineral used in building bones and releasing energy from muscles.

Some of the healthy whole grains include whole wheat, bulgur, oatmeal, quinoa, brown rice, whole-grain barley and corn.

Dietary Fibre

Dietary fibre has many health benefits. Consuming food which are high in fibre can reduce your risk of heart diseases, stroke, diabetes, some cancer as well as losing weight. Food that are high in fibre are usually derived from natural and unprocessed food.

Good sources of fibre can be found in nuts, barley, whole grains, oatmeal, wheat cereals and beans. For vegetables, it can be found in celery, carrot and tomatoes. Whereas for fruits, it can be found in berries, apples, pears and citrus fruits. It is best to start your day off with a whole grain cereal or include unprocessed wheat bran to your preferred cereal to increase your fibre intake.

Healthy Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are an essential part of a healthy diet. Did you know that we get about half of our calories from carbohydrates we take? Carbohydrates come in three categories namely sugars, fiber and starches.

Carbohydrates provide the body with glucose, which is converted to energy used to support bodily functions and physical activity. We can get carbohydrates from vast majority of food in our daily life. Most of them comes in form of plant-based food, and also starch. Simple sugar is also a simplest form of carbohydrates, also known as glucose. However, most glucose used in the processed food industry is artificial, and not a good source of carbohydrates.

So where do we get natural source of carbohydrates? We can find them in grains, milk, nuts, seeds, vegetables and fruits. Carbohydrate quality is important; some types of carbohydrate-rich food are better than others. Good carbohydrates are essential to promote good health by delivering fiber, vitamins, minerals and a host of important phytonutrients.

Calcium

Calcium is important for overall health. It is an essential mineral needed for building strong teeth and bones, blood clotting, cell signaling and the release of hormones. Almost every cell in our body uses calcium in some way.

Our body requires calcium to maintain a healthy bones and teeth. Dairy products are a good source of calcium, which they are also easily digested and absorbed into the body such as milk, unsweetened yogurt and cheese. Healthy Fats

People today avoid fat to lose fat, which is crazy! You need fat to survive. Fat is one of the main macronutrients that our body needs to carry out vital functions. So, depriving it from essential fats can cause many health problems! And not all fats are bad, there are good ones as well. Eating fat can be heart-healthy if you pick the right kind.

Adequate fats are important for good health. These healthy fats are needed by our body to provide energy, support metabolism, and immunity. Not just that, healthy fats help to protect your heart and satisfy your cravings between meals.

Custom Audiences

We mentioned at the start of this book that Facebook Ads included a lot of very smart and useful tools and features. Well, there are few better examples of this than custom audiences. Essentially, custom audiences allow you to choose even more precisely who you want to target. How can you target someone more precisely than choosing their age, location, job and hobbies?

By literally writing down a list of the people you want to market to and sending it to Facebook!

This is just one example but actually there are a number of types of ‘custom audience’. Find them below…

Customer List

This is the standard type of custom audience. All you’re doing here, is to literally give Facebook a list of contacts and then have those people be the only ones who see your ads. This is a fantastic way to turn a mailing list you may have been collecting from your website into a list you can then message from Facebook. Facebook will actually try to match phone numbers, emails or names with people in its database and that will then allow you to target them with your ads.

This is a perfect way to get even more value out of your mailing list. You know these are very warm leads, so perhaps all they need is that extra push on their Facebook page to buy your product!

Website Custom Audience

Here you place a ‘Facebook Pixel Tracking Code’ and use this for Facebook remarketing. There’s a whole chapter on this below, so let’s gloss over it for now…

App Activity Custom Audiences

This is a custom audience based on how people use your desktop or mobile app. This is similar to remarketing, except you’re doing it through an application. This is a great choice if you are using an app as part of your marketing campaign – for instance if you have created an app to let patrons order food from your venue. Look Alike Audiences

This is a particularly smart feature that Facebook offers marketers to find new potential customers. Here, once you have entered your mailing list or another custom list, you can then ask Facebook to look for more potential fans that have similar traits. For example then, if your list is filled with people of a certain age and with certain interests, Facebook will find more users that

match those demographics and then create an even bigger list for you. This is a great way to find more people just like the audience you’ve created so hard to create and it can save you a lot of time and money spent trying to perfect your targeting manually.

Setting Bids and Budgeting

Now you’ve created your ad text, your image and your targeting, you need to think about the amount you’re going to spend on it. This is another big decision that will have all the impact on just how successful your ads are.

To start with, you will want to choose the specific bids that you set on your ads by going to your Ads Manager and then looking at the table at the bottom of the page where you can see all the ads you created. Select ‘All Ad Sets’ if any are missing. Now hover your mouse over the ads you want to edit and then click ‘Edit Ad Set’. Here, you’ll have the option to change your bids and your budget to more closely fit your budget.

But how much should you be willing to pay for your ads?

Choosing the Right Budget

Your aim is to generate profit. Whatever else you do when creating your ads, it should always serve this end goal and that means you need to think carefully about how you’re going to budget. Yes, spending more on Facebook Ads will ensure that more of your ads get seen and theoretically, you can invest a lot of money into your ads in order increase the number of hits on your site and therefore the number of sales. The more you spend on ads, the more people come to your site and the more money you make…

Except in reality, it’s often more complicated than that. For starters, you will likely have a limited budget. Secondly, it will usually take a small amount of time before you eventually stumble on the best type of ad, with the best targeting and the best script. In other words, you risk wasting a lot of money by blowing your whole budget right away on an ad campaign that doesn’t work. This is why a smarter strategy is to work out how much budget you have to experiment with and then to gradually increase your spend as you become more and more confident in the strategy you’re using.

Of course you’ll need a bigger budget if you’re targeting a bigger niche too and for that reason, it can make sense to start out with a smaller niche where you can practice and then to move into bigger areas as you start to amass budget to spend and more experience on how to make the most of your adverts.

As mentioned, a good way to start setting your CPP is by looking at your CLV (customer lifetime value) and then working out how much each click is worth to you.

To work this out, first calculate how much profit you make on each sale. Once you’ve accounted for CoGS (Cost of Goods Sold – the overheads), how much of the revenue you make is actual profit? Now look at your conversion rates. When you get 10,000 clicks on your website, how many of those convert into paying customers? If it’s 1%, then that means you’re now getting 100 sales for every 10,000 clicks from your ad. If you’re selling a $30 ebook, then you’re going to be earning $3,000 dollars for those 10,000 clicks – not bad!

If you’re paying $1 per click though, then suddenly that $3,000 doesn’t look so good anymore! Now you’re paying $10,000 to earn just $3,000… you see the problem?

If you lower your bid/daily budget, then you might find that your ad doesn’t show as often and you’re unable to generate many clicks at all. Another strategy then might be to sell a more niche product, where you only have to pay 10 cents to get the same amount of visibility because you’re not bidding against other big advertisers. Now you’re paying $1,000 for $3,000 worth of sales!

Another option is to increase the value of your product. Of course this will mean you’re going to sell fewer items but somewhere you should be able to find the ideal ‘middle ground’ where you’re shifting a good amount of products with a good profit margin each.

Chapter 8: Top Tips for Growing Your Following

The tips in the last chapter will all help people to find your videos but there are also some basic marketing strategies you can opt to use to help your channel grow faster overall too…

Ask People to Subscribe

Watch any of the big YouTube channels and you’ll find that they end in pretty much the same way: with the creators asking their viewers to like, share and subscribe. This is the simplest way to get more subscribers and it works very well: a lot of people are more than happy to like your content it just doesn’t occur to them or they don’t realize quite how much it helps you! Just asking can make all the difference then by making it easy and reminding them.

Partner Up and Shout Out

Another very important tip when growing your following on YouTube is to look for other YouTubers that you can partner up with. If you watch any big channel, then you’ll find that it very often will work with other big channels and feature guest appearances from other creators, or just mention those other creators. A channel that does this very well is VSauce, which features answers to many fascinating questions. Michael Stevens is the creator of this channel and he is almost always recommending other creators or having them come on to talk about their areas of special knowledge.

This is essentially ‘influencer marketing’. It means that you’re finding an ‘influencer’ (anyone with a large existing audience) and then getting them to promote you.

The key to success in this arena is not to try and be too ambitious right away. In other words, you are probably not going to get a shoutout from VSauce unless you’re already pretty huge! Instead, try and find someone who is about the same size as you in a similar niche and then ask if they want to do a crossover video with you. This way, you both stand to gain by exposing eachother to your respective audiences. This will give you a boost in numbers and that then means that you can try and reach out to someone even larger next time!

If you don’t have any luck with this right away, then you can also try just giving people free mentions – you may find that those creators are flattered by it and see fit to do the same for you in kind.
Try not to view other creators in your niche as your competitors. Instead, view them as colleagues and think of the niche as a community of creators. This way, you’ll be able to ingratiate yourself into that community and work with them to help get yourself known while delivering something new for their viewers!

Advertising

Of course YouTube’s advertising platform is not just a way for you to make money, it can also be a way for you to spend money on your own adverts! This way, you can create an advert that will show at the start of other videos and bring people to your channel.

This costs money though and so it’s not going to be a good option unless you already have a good form of monetization set up – and that needs to be more than just advertising. If your YouTube channel is the start of an effective sales funnel, that leads people to buy a high ticket item, then you can calculate your LCV (lifetime customer value) and then decide how much you’re willing to spend on ads.

If you choose to go this route then it can be very effective – just take a look at the success of Tai Lopez thanks to his ‘here in my garage’ ads. Even if he is pretty much despised by half of the net…

Create Other Media and Cross-Promote

Finally, make sure that you aren’t doing all of your promotion on YouTube. The best way to look at YouTube is as one part of a much broader strategy to build your brand and build trust and influence across the web.

That means you should be on social media and this will give you a way to share your content as you build more followers. Think of this as a virtuous cycle and try to focus on the synergy between your social channels and your YouTube channel – you can ask people to follow you on Twitter and Facebook in your videos and then on Facebook and Twitter bring more people back to your channel and hopefully get more shares among the broader network.

This will help to make your brand feel more like a movement rather than a one man show and should help you to build genuine followers.

Your blog meanwhile can serve a similar role and you can use this to add additional content to your videos. This will make it easier for your videos to be found on Google and will give your fans a base where they can enjoy your content when they don’t have the option of watching YouTube.

The key to good branding is to ‘be everywhere’ and just because YouTube is your focus, that doesn’t mean you should ignore other channels.

Closing Comments

There’s an awful lot to take on board here but the most important thing to always keep in mind is that you’re aiming to provide value and to offer something different. You can be smart about the way you do this in order to minimize your work and maximize your exposure but the key is to be genuine, to be interesting and to really work on the quality and production values.

Also highly important is to be consistent and to keep plugging away. Don’t expect fame to come overnight and don’t expect your first video to get a thousand views. This takes a lot of time and dedication and you need to be consistently and reliably churning out high quality video if you’re going to convince people to subscribe and keep coming back.

But if you’re smart and you’re determined then there’s no reason you can’t make it with the very best of them and once the hits start coming, things will start to take off fast.

And trust me: it’s more than worth it.
