Public Domain Works - What Is It?

You may have heard of works that are in the public domain being used as new products by entrepreneurs today. This is a great way to start a business, or to improve the overall bottom line of an existing business.

Work that is in the public domain includes any work for which the copyright has expired, and not been renewed, any work that was published prior to 1923, works produced by the United States Government, and other specific Governments, Work that is donated to the public domain, or any other work that has no laws that restrict its use by the public.

The work itself may be in the form of a book, an article, a song, a film, a photograph, a painting, or even an invention. These works that are not covered by copyright laws, or are no longer covered by copyright laws, are free for the public to use as they see fit.

This does not mean that if a work is freely obtained it is in the public domain. In other words, if you saw it on a website, for free, that doesn’t mean that it is okay for you to use it. In fact, most things that are written down, in any form, are automatically copyrighted.

Public domain refers to work in which the copyright has run its course. According to the Copyright Office of the United States:

“The term of copyright for a particular work depends on several factors, including whether it has been published, and, if so, the date of first publication. As a general rule, for works created after January 1, 1978, copyright protection lasts for the life of the author plus an additional 70 years. For an anonymous work, a pseudonymous work, or a work made for hire, the copyright endures for a term of 95 years from the year of its first publication or a term of 120 years from the year of its creation, whichever expires first. For works first published prior to 1978, the term will vary depending on several factors.” (Source: https://www.copyright.gov) Public domain also refers to work that was meant for the public domain, such as work that is donated, as well as work that never had a copyright, which would be work that was created prior to 1923, or work that was not copyrightable material.

These materials are free for the public to use, in any manner that they choose. You can use bits and pieces of a public domain work, or the entire work itself. You can create new work from the bits and pieces, or sell an entire work – as you see fit.

Copyright or Copyleft?

You most likely know what a copyright is, but if you don’t, according to the United States Copyright Office, a copyright is a set of rights granted by the Government for a limited time to protect creative or artistic forms or works including literary works, movies, musical works, sound recordings, paintings, photographs, software, and industrial designs.

But what is Copyleft?

While Copyleft is NOT an actual legal term, such as copyright, it is often referred to as a reciprocal license. With a Copyleft, instead of a copyright, restrictions are usually imposed on a work stating that when the work is copied, modified, or used in any subsequent work, the author of that subsequent work must grant the same Copyleft rights to the public for the subsequent work. It’s kind of like passing the rights forward.

Copyleft is usually symbolized with a backward C in the copyright symbol. Copyleft is often used for open source computer software, documents, music, and art. Copyleft is essentially the opposite of a copyright.

Where a copyright basically says ‘no, you may not use my work,’ a Copyleft says ‘yes, please use my work, but you must allow others to use the work that you create from my work as well.’

Just as there are copyright licenses on copyrighted work, there must be Copyleft licenses for Copyleft work as well. The most commonly accepted Copyleft license is the GNU General Public License, or as it is commonly known, the GPL which can be seen at:

Very often, the text you choose from the Public Domain will need edited or organized. There are a number of reasons for this, including.

Irrelevant Sections of Text. There are often sentences or paragraphs in the text that do not support the primary message of your report. Omitting these will help to focus and streamline your message.

Multiple Sources of Information. If your information comes from multiple sources, you may have competing or overlapping information that should be deleted as necessary.

Outdated Language. When using classic texts from the Public Domain, you will find that the language is outdated or unclear. This can often be remedied with some quick word substitutions. If you are unsure of the meaning of a word, look it up. Don’t assume you know…you could be wrong and embarrass yourself.

While you may choose to do this process yourself (especially if the needed corrections are minimal), do not rule out hiring a ghost writer or editor to help you.

It seems that the only places people think of when you mention “honeymoon” are Niagara Falls and Hawaii! But there are so many beautiful and exotic locations that can be just as romantic. If you’re not a fan of Niagara Falls, don’t fret!

If the two of you are big fans of the outdoors, why not plan a camping honeymoon? Europe is a popular destination for many couples. There are plenty of romantic tours of some of Europe’s most romantic cities. You could spend a week seeing the sights of Paris, Rome, Venice,

Madrid, and London.

A cruise is another great idea. If the two of you are big fans of the sea, a cruise might be just what you’re looking for! And don’t expect to spend all of your time on a boat! Many cruises have several landfall destinations where you can go ashore and spend time shopping and sightseeing.

The honeymoon is something the two of you should both enjoy. If you love the beach, but your fiance can’t stand it, a tropical getaway might not be the best choice. You might be disappointed because you didn’t get your dream honeymoon in Barbados, but the two of you will have a much more memorable honeymoon if you compromise and choose a mutually enjoyable location together!

Ingredients
2 teaspoons freshly grated lemon zest, divided
3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice, divided
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, divided
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
Freshly ground pepper to taste
11/4 pounds boneless, skinless chicken thighs, trimmed and cut into 3 pieces each
1 large fennel bulb
1 large onion
1/2 cup dry white wine
1/2 cup reduced-sodium chicken broth
1/2 cup oil-cured black olives, pitted

Instructions

1. Whisk 1 teaspoon lemon zest, 2 tablespoons lemon juice,1 tablespoon oil, garlic, oregano, sugar, salt and pepper in a 71/2-by-11-inch (2-quart) glass or ceramic baking dish. Add chicken and toss to coat. Cover and marinate in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes or for up to 8 hours.

2. Meanwhile, trim stalks from fennel, reserving the lacy greens for garnish. Slice the fennel bulb lengthwise into 1/4-inch-thick slices. Lay slices flat and cut into 1/4-inch-thick slivers. Peel onion, cut in half lengthwise and slice.

3. Preheat oven to 350°F. Heat the remaining 1 tablespoon oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add fennel and onion; cook, stirring often, until softened and lightly browned, 8 to 10 minutes. (You may need to add a little water to prevent scorching.) Add wine, broth and the remaining 1 tablespoon lemon juice; bring to a simmer, stirring. Cook for 5 minutes, then stir in olives. Spoon this mixture over the chicken. Cover with foil and bake until the chicken is cooked through and the fennel is very tender, 35 to 40 minutes.

4. Finely chop enough of the fennel fronds to make 2 tablespoons. Combine with the remaining 1 teaspoon lemon zest; sprinkle over the chicken before serving.

Ingredient note: Oil-cured olives are cured with salt rather than a brine, then rubbed with olive oil. They can be identified by their wrinkled skin.

Hold an impression of what you want to accomplish at all times, this pulls it to be manifested inside your life. View yourself there and try to feel how you would if you were there already. The only thing that's keeping you from being there is you and entirely you, so let yourself be there in any way imaginable. We're all able of accomplishing our goals; it’s just a matter of time. By visualizing or acting as if you already accomplished your goals, you’ll discover new focus on why you're working towards your goals.

If you're like me and working entirely alone to achieve these goals you've set for yourself, then I advise breaking that work up into littler pieces. It's best and easier to work as though you’re making a jigsaw puzzle, rather than making a 20 foot wall painting. This will help keep you motivated and centered due to the fact that you're unceasingly achieving small pieces of the goals.

Don’t listen to the nay-sayers, if somebody thinks you’re a bit nuts, or don’t have trust in what you can achieve, then forget about them. These individuals are just a bit upset that they don’t have the drive, as you do, to aim for the stars. Don’t entirely blame them either; it’s just that society has a way of disciplining individuals into persisting in their safe and cozy comfort zones. If you let them affect you, your centering will disperse, and we don’t want that.

Remain out of your comfort zone; being successful is all about accepting risks and doing what is generally not done in our society – taking the path lower traveled. If you persist in your comfort zone, you’ll be at ease and that may lead you to blanking out your goals – drifting in limbo while you look for something to happen is never beneficial. Avoid your comfort zone, if you’re sort of uncomfortable it might mean that you're climbing higher into new and unchartered soil you've never been in, and that's exactly where you want to be.

Check everything you’ve achieved at the end of the week to supercharge yourself, and then see what are your approaching tasks for the next week. This exercise keeps you centered by furnishing you with hard facts about where you’ve been and where you’re going next. Always put down everything that you have been doing and anything you wish to do. Use a planner, a calendar, excel, word, or whatsoever you want to use to put down everything, and go over it once or twice a week – but merely do it.

Among the things that's always helped me with my goals is discussing them. I’ll discuss where I am, troubles I need to fix, fresh goals I have brought to my list, or how much work I have left to achieve any of them. By talking about your goals to trusted friends and even family members, you make support for your thoughts, and hey who knows, they might even help you see something you haven’t. It’s always good to let it out, don’t keep it in as though it was a secret – silence isn't the way, you need to discuss it.
