Dan: But could you find a list of 5,000 ReMax realtors? In a heartbeat. I could go one and on but those are some of the biggest mistakes.

Terry: That's very helpful actually. The next thing that just popped into my mind is that you're probably opposite of all the gurus and very professional people online where you don't follow into the mainstream I'd like to say. Most of the gurus are saying that to be successful, find a need and fill it. What's your opinion on that?

Dan: I think that's nonsense. Here's why: if you want to go broke, find a need and steal it. If you want to become rich, find a want, and steal it. People don't buy what they need, they buy what they want. We only need a few things in life to survive: food, water, and shelter; that's about it. We don't need a Mercedes, a big house, a Rolex, and we certainly don't need Starbuck's Coffee.

Terry: Well that's debatable.

Dan: And we don't need 30 pairs of shoes. I hope my girlfriend is listening to this. But guess what? We want them; we want the nicer things in life. People buy what they want, not what they need. Find a want and steal it; don't find a need and steal it. Position your products and services as the ultimate solution to your prospects problems. Fulfill their dreams; fulfill their desires and you'll do well.

Terry: Actually, that's a good point. If somebody's going to start a business right now, they're starting from scratch, what advice would you give them then? To find a want and not a need, and fill that want, how would you go about setting up that business?

Dan: That's a tough question Terry. Instead of just telling your listeners some pieces of the puzzle, why don't I walk you through the whole process? Imagine I'm starting a business with you right now, and the process we'll go though to build a profitable business. That way, you'll be able to see the whole process and behind the scenes and my thought process.

In an article published in American Agriculturist, Dora M. Morrell says: “There is an inference that a dinner of herbs is rather a poor thing, one not to be chosen as a pleasure. Perhaps it might be if it came daily, but, for once in a while, try this which I am going to tell you.

“To prepare a dinner of herbs in its best estate you should have a bed of seasonings such as our grandmothers had in their gardens, rows of sage, of spicy mint, sweet marjoram, summer savory, fragrant thyme, tarragon, chives and parsley. To these we may add, if we take herbs in the Scriptural sense, nasturtium, and that toothsome esculent, the onion, as well as lettuce. If you wish a dinner of herbs and have not the fresh, the dried will serve, but parsley and mint you can get at most times in the markets, or in country gardens, where they often grow wild.

“Do you know, my sister housewife, that if you were to have a barrel sawed in half, filled with good soil, some holes made in the side and then placed the prepared half barrel in the sun, you could have an herb garden of your own the year through, even if you live in a city flat? In the holes at the sides you can plant parsley, and it will grow to cover the barrel, so that you have a bank of green to look upon. On the top of the half barrel plant your mint, sage, thyme and tarragon. Thyme is so pleasing a plant in appearance and fragrance that you may acceptably give it a place among those you have in your window for ornament.

“The Belgians make a parsley soup that might begin your dinner, or rather your luncheon. For the soup, thicken flour and butter together as for drawn butter sauce, and when properly cooked thin to soup consistency with milk. Flavor with onion juice, salt and pepper. Just before serving add enough parsley cut in tiny bits to color the soup green. Serve croutons with this.

“For the next course choose an omelette with fine herbs. Any cookbook will give the directions for making the omelette, and all that will be necessary more than the book directs is to have added to it minced thyme, tarragon and chives before folding, or they may be stirred into the omelette before cooking.

“Instead of an omelette you may have eggs stuffed with fine herbs and served in cream sauce. Cut hard?boiled eggs in half the long way and remove the yolks. Mash and season these, adding the herbs, as finely minced as possible. Shape again like yolks and return to the whites. Cover with a hot cream sauce and serve before it cools. Both of these dishes may be garnished with shredded parsley over the top.

Business cards and Stationary are simple but important methods in establishing your business.

You can effectively market yourself if you have a business card handy whenever you run into a situation where you are dealing with a potential client.

Imagine someone striking up a conversation with you that ends up being about your business. As they leave they ask you for a business card. What if you don‘t have one? How unprofessional will that look?

Not only will you look like you aren‘t all that serious about your business but you will lose out on potential clients who want a copy of your business information for future reference.

Creating business cards is a no brainer method of promotion and it‘s exceptionally affordable. Once you have your business cards printed off, use EVERY opportunity that you can to pass them out. Remember, every single person that you meet is a potential client. Everyone has birthdays =)

People you could give business cards to include neighbors, your local youth group centers, people at your church if you attend, you could leave flyers with your business card attached at local shops, your child‘s school, sports clubs, you name it!

If you take five minutes right now to write down a list of places you can leave business cards or flyers you would be surprised at just how easy it will be to spread the word!

When I started since I didn‘t attend a lot of community events, and I didn‘t regularly go to church, I decided to print off flyers and stick them on bulletin boards at grocery stores. I attached business cards to the flyers.

This is a five minute promotional tactic that is easy (not to mention free) and I had orders the same week. Obviously I wanted to expand my marketing beyond that, but it was a simple way to start out.

Just use the resources that are available to you and have faith in yourself. Start off slow if you are nervous, and go from there. Just take action! That‘s the most important thing you can do. The rest will follow.

Terry: Right. They’re kind of like Internet marketers: they focus on the tools and not the tactics.

Kelly: We’re all the same. The Internet is the same thing.

Terry: So once you got them in that position, what’s the next step? Maybe they’re not addressing the way that they should be… where does it go from there? Do you take a look at their sales copy and advertising and break it down? How does that work?

Kelly: Yea. Before we even look at their advertising copy, the next step is to really know your client and who you’re trying to sell to. I have a process that I go through with people because we really want to nail it down to one perfect, ideal client. As a copywriter, I’m trained to talk to one person when I’m writing, so it’s more like a conversation. As a business owner, what I want to do is for you to know who your idea, perfect client is, and tell me all about him. What worries them? What do they love? What is their family life like? You might combine three clients into one, but we want to know this one person.

Once we’ve identified who that is, are we talking to them correctly in all of the messages that we’re sending? That’s tricky; it was hard for me and hard for a lot of people to narrow it down to that one person because if feels like you’re alienating so many other people who you could be serving. In reality, what happens is that you’re talking so directly to that one perfect person that the other people hear your message because it’s very clear. Other people that you want to attract hear it.

That’s a big step that I spend time really digging into and getting really clear on who that person is. Writing the materials and writing to them in the ads and other messages is easier because you know who this person is.

Terry: How do you decide on the media? Once you decided on the perfect person that you’re going to write to, how do you decide if you’re going to do newspapers, postcards, sales letters, or direct marketing? How do you decide which avenues to go with?

Chapter 4 - Motherhood

You’ve gone through the grueling hours of labor and delivery, and now it’s time to enjoy your newborn. While you may not get enough sleep and will feel like you’re running on empty, the sheer joy that a child brings is enough to make up for all of the sacrifices.

Taking Baby Home

While your body went through massive changes during pregnancy (and will continue to do so postpartum) your life will also change dramatically now that baby has arrived. Once you get home you’ll more than likely want to take a nap. The old adage, sleep when baby sleeps is a good one to follow. You and your partner may wish to introduce the little one to his or her new home and then tuck them in their new crib.

New fathers can help out by taking care of household duties, changing diapers and letting mom get some well-deserved sleep. You may even wish to take a nap together while baby sleeps. You probably haven’t had very much alone time these past few days, so take these relaxing moments for all they’re worth.

You should also expect visits from family and friends at this point in time. Everyone will be enthusiastic to see your baby, but be careful not to run yourself ragged. Be honest with family when you’re tired and need to rest rather than socialize.

While you’ll most likely feel overwhelmed, remember that there are always people to help you. Your partner, your family and friends are more than willing to lend a helping hand so you can have some time for yourself.

Becoming a "Mom"

It may be a bit strange to take on this new role as “mother,” considering the only mother in your life up until now has been your own. Becoming a mom isn’t that difficult in the sense that you must suddenly begin acting like one. For most women, it will be instinctual. You will naturally worry about the wellbeing of your child and do your best for them all the time. However, as your child grows, the skills necessary to cope with your child’s behavior are learned. Just as with every other role in life or even jobs, the finer details are learned, not inherited.

A lot of new moms and even many not so new moms feel as though they lose a bit of themselves or a bit of their personal identity upon becoming a mother.

While it may feel this way, it certainly doesn’t hav e to be this way.

Letting a child take over your entire life is not very healthy. You still need things

for yourself as well like your career, love life and hobbies. While you may not be able to devote as much time to these things as before, you can still keep your “old” self alive and kicking.

Postpartum Depression

While many women experience what is called the “baby blues” or a period of about a week after baby is born where she is a bit depressed, postpartum depression is an entirely different story. Between 10-15% of women experience postpartum depression to some degree and while the condition is treatable, it’s very serious.

Postpartum depression can be defined as the onset of serious mood changes anywhere from one month to one year after baby is born. It is much more serious than the baby blues and must be treated by a doctor with appropriate therapy and medication.
Causes

Postpartum depression is believed to be caused by the radical shifting of hormones after childbirth. While some women only experience mild mood swings, others are thrown into the depths of depression.

Symptoms

PPD can express itself in several different ways. While the symptoms are very much like those of regular depression, there are a few key differences. Common symptoms of postpartum depression include:

Lethargy.

Hopelessness.

Lack of appetite.

Inability to sleep.

Restlessness.

Continuous crying.

Mood swings.

Lack of interest in once enjoyed activities.

Lack of interest in baby.

Confusion.

Fear of harming oneself.

Fear of harming baby.

Likely Candidates

As with all mood disorders and instances of depression, a family history of the disease automatically predisposes you to becoming diagnosed. You are also more likely to have postpartum depression if you have suffered from depression prior to pregnancy, or suffered from postpartum depression with a prior pregnancy. An unhappy or stressed marriage can also contribute to a woman’s likelihood of developing the disorder. Women without close relatives or friends to discuss their feelings with are also more likely to become depressed.

Many women feel ashamed of their feelings and disinterest in their baby when suffering from postpartum depression, so do not share them with their spouse or loved ones. While it is understandable why a woman would feel this way, there is no need to be ashamed or feel guilty. PPD is no ones fault (except for maybe hormones). If you think you may be suffering from PPD, it is imperative you notify someone so you can seek proper treatment. PPD left untreated can escalate into a more serious condition or leave you unhappy for a long time.
Treatments

Upon seeing your doctor, he or she will evaluate you to rule out any sort of physiological problem first. Next, you’ll be evaluated and then diagnosed with PPD. Once diagnosed, you can receive proper treatment. The most common forms of treatment for PPD include a combination of medication and therapy. Antidepressants can help restore the chemical balance to your brain, therefore lifting your mood and allowing you to enjoy life once again. The therapy portion provides women with the proper coping skills.

Many women also enroll in a support group to help get through this trying time with women that are going through the same or similar thing. It is also very important for women to continue their treatment plan until their doctor says otherwise. To stop medication suddenly is dangerous and increases the likelihood of a relapse.

The main purpose of the blog is going to be an additional source of traffic for your client's business. It will also link back to their main website, giving them a valuable back link which is helpful for SEO(search engine optimization).A blog is basically a website, but with more bells and whistles. They Targeted traffic = leads = customers. That is why having a blog is important for your client. Also, nowadays people love blogs and they love reading other peoples'/businesses' blogs.

Most major companies and multimillion dollar businesses have blogs...so why shouldn't your client? <— This can serve as a great selling point when pitching this to businesses. As far as how much to charge an offline business for creating a blog (or multiple blogs) for them -- It's really up to you! Some people enjoy the concept of charging low prices for this service and getting more clients because of it. For example, if you charge only $100 bucks for this, you might be able to do 5 or 6 in a week easy. That's $500-600 a week ($2,000+ per month) which is a great living for many people. Others would rather charge more (like $499+) for a custom blog and they would rather have less clients. Instead of needing to get 5clients to make $500, they only need to get ONE! I like both of those concepts and both have worked for me before, so again, it's really up to you. Simple Method #3: The 3rd method of making easy cash from offline businesses is to offer Myspace/Facebook page creation services. EVERY big name business nowadays has a Myspace page or a Facebook page which is a great selling point for this service. Once you explain the benefits of social networking, building Granted, a lot of businesses might already have one or they know how to set it up...but many will not. These are the ones you must find and then offer to create one for them. Some businesses might have a Myspace page but not a Facebook, or vice versa. Some businesses might need you to "pimp" their Myspace page. You can charge anywhere from $50-100 EASILY to set-up a Myspace or Facebook page for a local offline business. How many of these do you think you can do in a week?! Plus, it should only take an hour at most (more like 15 minutes!) to set up one of these pages for your client, so the labor involved is not difficult at all, therefore $100 is worth it. If you can charge more and you feel like it's appropriate then by all means, do it! Simple Method #4: This method involves a little bit more work, but not much. Many businesses could benefit GREATLY from having Craigslist ads posted for them once a week or once a day even. Craigslist gets over 10 million visitors a day! This can obviously be a great selling point for this service. Once a business owner hears that and confirm it (if they need to), you will be able to charge them for this service with no problem. You can package together different options, such as "5 Craigslist Ads Per Week for $XX" or "One month of Craigslist advertising I think $10 per ad is fair for offline businesses (considering they pay the Yellow Pages and other advertising companies MUCH more money!). If you do 5 a week for them, that's $50 a week which comes out to $200 per month, from just one client. It should only take about 5 minutes or so to post a Craigslist ad for someone, it is not difficult at all. Simple Method #5: Last but not least, we are going to discuss a method that makes some people a LOT of money! I know a guy who manages the PPC (Pay-Per-Click) advertising campaign for a BIG NAME security company and he makes serious money. We're talking 5 figures a month. Of course, we are not going after that just yet! However, there is plenty of easy money to be made in the setting up of a business's PPC campaign. I am sure many of you who are reading this have already tried PPC advertising at one time or another.

Phishing & Identity Theft

Who hasn’t received an email directing them to visit a familiar website where they are being asked to update their personal information? The website needs you to verify or update your passwords, credit card numbers, social security number, or even your bank account number. You recognize the business name as one that you’ve conducted business with in the past.

So, you click on the convenient “take me there” link and proceed to provide all the information they have requested. Unfortunately, you find out much later that the website is bogus. It was created with the sole intent to steal your personal information.

You, my friend, have just been “phished”.

Phishing (pronounced as “fishing”) is defined as the act of sending an email to a recipient falsely claiming to have an established, legitimate business. The intent of the phisher is to scam the recipient into surrendering their private information, and ultimately steal your identity.

It is not at easy as you think to spot an email phishing for information. At first glance, the email may look like it is from a legitimate company. The "From" field of the e-mail may have the .com address of the company mentioned in the e-mail. The clickable link even appears to take you to the company's website, when in fact, it is a fake website built to replicate the legitimate site.

Many of these people are professional criminals. They have spent a lot of time in creating emails that look authentic. Users need to review all emails requesting personal information carefully. When reviewing your email remember that the "From Field" can be easily changed by the sender. While it may look like it is coming from a .com you do business with, looks can be deceiving.

Also keep in mind that the phisher will go all out in trying to make their email look as legitimate as possible. They will even copy logos or images from the official site to use in their emails. Finally, they like to include a clickable link that the recipient can follow to conveniently update their information.

A great way to check the legitimacy of the link is to point at the link with your mouse. Then, look in the bottom left hand screen of your computer. The actual website address to which you are being directed will show up for you to view. It is a very quick and easy way to check if you are being directed to a legitimate site.

Follow the golden rule: never, ever, click the links within the text of the e-mail, and always delete the e-mail immediately. Once you have deleted the e-mail, empty the trash box in your e-mail accounts as well. If you are truly concerned that you are missing an important notice regarding one of your accounts, then type the full URL address of the website into your browser. At least then you can be confident that you are, in fact, being directed to the true and legitimate website.

The Advancement of the Keyloggers

A keylogger is a program that runs in your computer’s background secretly recording all your keystrokes. Once your keystrokes are logged, they are hidden away for later retrieval by the attacker. The attacker then carefully reviews the information in hopes of finding passwords or other information that would prove useful to them.

For example, a keylogger can easily obtain confidential emails and reveal them to any interested outside party willing to pay for the information.

Keyloggers can be either software or hardware based.

Software-based keyloggers are easy to distribute and infect, but at the same time are more easily detectable.

Hardware-based keyloggers are more complex and harder to detect. For all that you know, your keyboard could have a keylogger chip attached and anything being typed is recorded into a flash memory sitting inside your keyboard. Keyloggers have become one of the most powerful applications used for gathering information in a world where encrypted traffic is becoming more and more common.

As keyloggers become more advanced, the ability to detect them becomes more difficult. They can violate a user’s privacy for months, or even years, without being noticed. During that time frame, a keylogger can collect a lot of information about the user it is monitoring. A keylogger can potential obtain not only passwords and log-in names, but credit card numbers, bank account details, contacts, interests, web browsing habits, and much more. All this collected information can be used to steal user’s personal documents, money, or even their identity.

Terry: That goes back again to actually purchasing the product, and finding out how it works.

Ken: Yea. I think you have to know what it's going to do. Obviously, a system like Affiliate Showcase is pretty sophisticated with a lot of viral marketing tools and a lot of stuff going on. If you take a quick look at it, it would be easy to be overwhelmed because there's so much there. But, you need to get in there and try it out. Sign up for the preversion of the site. That's a great way to go.

Terry: What kind of conversion rate do you have from the people who sign up for the pre-version and then upgrade to a more comprehensive version?

Ken: It's probably comparable to the people who get active.

Terry: I wouldn't be surprised.

Ken: That means that if somebody gets active with the Affiliate Showcase site, it's a no-brainer to upgrade because the executive level of Affiliate Showcase is really the best deal. We structure it that way intentionally. There are reasons that we want that to be the best deal, and it really it. So, if a person is active and serious about it, they'll upgrade because it's really a no-brainer to do that.

So, it's a good conversion if you actively do this, are actively working on it and if you're motivated.

Terry: So, if somebody comes online and they have a business type attitude, not a get-rich-quick type of attitude... that's the type of person who would...

Ken: Yea. It's not a get-rich-quick-scheme. There are a lot of things out there that promise you instant wealth, but it takes some work and some thinking.

Terry: If I was looking at two or three different programs, and one was a very high-priced item or product that I can sell online that I probably won't sell too many but I'll make a good commission every time I do sell one, and there's another one with a low price, that I'm going to make a lot more sales with a lower commission. Which side would you tend to go to?

Ken: Well, there are a couple things I look for in programs. Obviously, dollar volume is a factor. If something pays you $1,000 every time you sell one, it sounds like a pretty good deal. It's only a good deal, however, if you sell some. There was just a product that we started working with which is really easy that you basically send people to a free presentation, and that's all you have to do. These people run an excellent conference and have a real solid business on the back end, and they do a great job. Then, they pay you $700 for every sale.

They convert on a regular basis.

So, a program like that is great. The better programs are high dollar and convert well. Conversion is key; they have to make the sale.

They have to have a good sales letter, a product that's valuable, and that sells at a reasonable price. The other aspect that we should consider is having a recurring income. Affiliate Showcase is a recurring income. I get 25% of a $59 sale, that doesn't sound like a lot, but when you start multiplying that by a year, two years, three years, it just keeps going and can add up to some pretty big bucks if you look at a recurring income type of situation.

Terry: So, that's going to be the ultimate, if you can get a product that has a fairly decent price tag, a good conversion rate, and a recurring income.

Ken: That sounds like a great product to me.

Terry: Sounds like Affiliate Showcase. That's super. We can wrap it up today, so I don't keep you all day and you can have some time to get some work done. Pretend I'm coming online with $100, what should I do?

Ken: Boy, your options are wide open. If you have $100 and you want to make that investment into building an online revenue, I suggest that you start off with a wife that's really watching the beans.

Terry: That costs more than $100 though.

Ken: I have a wife-o-meter, when whenever I start to spend money, I think what she's going to say.

Terry: You have to get her approval.

Ken: I would look at the options and be very careful in exactly what you do. So, if you only have $100, don't go out and buy an Affiliate Showcase executive site, because in two months time, that money will be more than gone, and who knows if you'll have a return on that or not. A smarter way to do that is to sign up for the free version of Affiliate Showcase. If you can promote it and get four people to sign up, you can convert to the executive level, which will instantly up your commissions, which means that your site is paid for and you don't have to worry about that recurring income.

In the meantime, you can learn the system, you can get used to it, you can play with some of the features, you won't have all of the executive type features for customization and stuff, but you'll get a feel for the system and you'll start to earn some money. I would build off that income and reinvest into your business. In other words, just keep pouring it back in so you can build it one step at a time.

There are two ways to make money online. You can invest a lot of money, which will generate interest. If you're not totally stupid to keep throwing it away like a lot of people were in the dotcom boom, then you can make money with money. Leverage is one way to go. If you don't have lots of money to put into it, look at putting your time into it. Time or money... they work best together. So, if you could invest some time and some money, then that's your best shot.

Terry: Your winning formula.

Ken: Yup.

Terry: That's super. I'll close off the interview now, Ken.

Ken: Thank you for having me. I really appreciate it. It was a fun talk and it was great to talk to you finally person to person.

Terry: You too. Thank you very much. I'll just end the interview by saying that you've been listening to Ken McArthur and myself, Terry Telford. Thanks for your time.
