Chapter 6: Taking Care Of Your Iguana Correctly

There are many aspects of caring for your iguana that you still need to take into consideration, even after building your habitat. Let’s break them down here.

Feeding Them

Iguanas are very delicate animals and part of that comes from their dietary needs. But, it will be up to you to determine what the right foods for your iguana are based on his tastes and your needs. But, we’ll break it down for you too.

Don’t be fooled by myths. Iguanas eat plants, not any type of insect or animal. If they do ingest this it is only by accident. They are herbivores! Don’t make the mistake of feeding your iguana any type of animal protein.

As for what you should do, there are several things you’ll need to take into consideration. First, anything that you give your pet should be clean, healthy and sterile. Fresh food and water is a must for you and so is it for them. You’ll have an unhealthy living environment with a sick iguana if you allow them to drink dirty water.

You should feed your iguana daily. Give him clean water several times per day, too. Although you may hear that you don’t have to do this, it is imperative to provide your pet with fresh food daily and allow him to eat as much as he wants.

Don’t worry about over feeding them. They can’t be overfed. But, how much; give them food and let them eat. You’ll soon be able to tell just how much is too much and how much he wants. As he gets bigger, his appetite will grow, too. Feed him in the morning, after he’s waken for the best, all day temperature aided digestion he needs.

Water is a funny thing with iguanas. In fact, you should train them to drink more water. To do this, use a highly enjoyed piece of lettuce, such as collards, and place a small amount of it in their water bowl. When he eats it, he’ll take in water too. Soon, make the piece smaller and smaller until he is coming to the bowl to drink water rather than to eat the treat.

The first step to successful fly fishing isn‘t fishing at all. It entails taking in your surroundings and observing the area for just a little while. Take 15 minutes or so to just watch and see if you can observe what the fish are doing.

Look at the bugs that are flying around. Look for evidence of a recent fly hatching that will provide a yummy treat for the trout that are in the water. Where the bugs are is probably where the fish are.

Take a look at grass stems and weeds near the shore line for clues of a recent hatch. Stonefly nymphs crawl out of the water to hatch into adults. This transformation occurs on weeds, grass, rocks and anything else handy near the shore line. Are their cases present anywhere? Mayflies molt after they hatch. This also occurs on grass and weeds. Can you find any clues of a recent mayfly hatch?

While you look for clues of a recent hatch, see if any aquatic insects are crawling around on nearby bushes. Streamside brush is a great hangout for aquatic insects that have recently hatched and are waiting their turn in the egg lying cycle. If you see a lot of a certain kind of insect hanging around the brush, you can bet on patterns that imitate that insect when you get to the stream.

Spider webs are a great place to look for clues. Spiders make a habit of catching insects that fly around their web. If the web is loaded with unfortunate mayflies, the fish are probably loaded with them too. Here‘s a perfect opportunity to match the size, shape and color of the fly without trying to catch one on the water.

What are the fish doing? Are they rising to flies, and can you see the fly they‘re eating? If you don‘t see rising fish, it‘s not very likely that they‘ll eat a fly floating on the surface. If you don‘t see them rising, a nymph might be in order. After all, nymphs are available to them all of the time.

Is there a cloud of caddis flies hovering above streamside brush? Caddis flies are a common sight in the summer hovering above willows and brush. If you see something that looks like a cloud of tiny moths dancing around a streamside willow, grab your box of caddis imitations and start flogging the water with one, you‘ve just solved a mystery.

Fish have three basic needs: food, cover, and a resting place. There are other variations of those, such as fish looking for warmer water in the spring when the water is uncomfortably cold — or cooler water in summer when water temperatures rise.

If you don’t know what you’re doing when it comes to towing and launching your boat, you could turn an easy activity into a nightmare. When you don’t know what you’re doing regarding trailering and launching a boat, you could be in for some serious problems.

As we’ve already told you earlier, All trailers must be licensed and have brake, tail and clearance lights. Laws vary from state to state, so it's wise to check with the nearest motor vehicle department for your local requirements.

The trailer must be big enough for the boat, with the rollers and bunkers adjusted properly! Hulls are designed to be evenly supported by the water underneath them. When taken out of water, an adequate alternative must be supplied. Hulls that are not supported properly on the trailer will be damaged as you tow your rig over bumps and potholes.

The towing vehicle must be big and powerful enough to handle the total, combined weight of the boat, trailer and all the gear. Most of the front wheel drive cars available today are only capable of towing very small boats. Y our owner's manual will clearly state the towing capacity of your vehicle, so refer to it.

Tie-downs are an absolute necessity! At the minimum, you need both the winch cable and a safety stop chain at the bow, a gunwale tie-down amidships and two transom tie-downs.

Never ever stand with your face directly over the winch or winch handle. When deploying the winch cable to retrieve the boat, the winch handle spins around at a fierce rate smashing anything in its path - like faces, teeth, hands - you get the picture.

Make sure you have safety chains that run from the trailer tongue and are attached to your towing vehicle with stout S-hooks or threaded links. These chains must be (a) crossed and (b) short enough to keep the trailer tongue from hitting the pavement if the hitch fails.

Tongue weight - the amount of weight the trailer's tongue is carrying - should be approximately 10% of the total weight of both boat and trailer. If the tongue weight is too high, the strain on the hitch, trailer tongue and towing vehicle’s suspension system will be excessive. Steering quickly gets tricky as now the towing vehicle is out of balance.

Conversely, if the tongue weight is significantly less than 10%, the trailer will start to weave back and forth. In other words, the tail starts wagging the dog; we've all seen this scenario going down the highway.

To work these areas, you will want to do a lot of dumbbell squats, leg curls, standing calf raises, and leg presses. Add some lunges as well as dumbbell squat dead lifts as well for maximum effectiveness. You may want to invest in an exercise ball so that you can work your abs and make them tight and defined.

Change your workout every time you perform it and focus on one or two body parts each day you train. By doing this, you are not over-exerting muscles without giving them time to heal. Recovery is very important to the body’s muscles, so give them the time they need to heal and grow.
