Chapter 14 Staying Motivated

Just look around you, it’s a beautiful world out there. Life is wonderful provided you have the time and can afford to sit back and enjoy the simple pleasures of life. This is a feeling that hits us every now and then. And then when we realize that we have to be confined within the floor walls of our office, doing some work that has no scope for imagination, we end up depressed.

Every job loses its charm after some time if nothing out of the way is done to make the job interesting. To make things worse, there are too many distractions around us. We end up thinking that this is not the job that I wanted to be doing. And when we realize that we will be doing this same job probably till the end of our lives, we will want to scream.

It is a human tendency to get bored with something after some time. When we get a new job, ten for the first couple of weeks we are like the peasant boy who walked into a new palace. Every thing is new and interesting and our interest is completely captured. We try to learn things as quickly as possible and are eager to impress and prove to the world that we are perfect for the job. But after a few months we get used to everything and slowly everything begins to lose the charm. We get bored and start looking for greener pastures.

It is at this stage that procrastination starts raising its villainous head. If the tasks that we are doing are repetitive ad monotonous, the picture becomes bleaker. Along with this, if the requires that we remain on toes all day long, then the future is sealed. It is in such situations that we need to keep ourselves motivated.

Speaking from the Organizational Behavior point of view let us take a look at what motivation is all about. The human brain as I mentioned earlier is a virtual store house of energy. There is nothing that we cannot do once we put our mind to it. Yeah, sure, all that has been proved time and again. But along with it comes a string attached. The same brain is easily distracted.

In fact our imagination is probably the one thing that can travel faster than light. And so it is no easy task to keep the brain occupied in the same task for an extended period of time. If the job is monotonous the task becomes more difficult and if the job is demanding and involves a lot of pressure to keep time then you are done for.

Set machine to basic bake. Tested 3/3/94 A small dark loaf with a nice mustardy flavor. While dense, it can be sliced quite thinly.

Anyone can set up shop online. Confirm an online seller's physical address and phone number in case you need to get in touch with them. If you get an email or pop-up message from the seller while you're browsing that asks for financial information, don't reply or click on the link in the message. Legitimate companies don't ask for this information via email or pop-ups.

Read between the lines.

Read the seller's description of the product closely, especially the fine print. Words like "refurbished," "vintage," or "close-out" may indicate that the product is in less-than-mint condition; name-brand items with "too good to be true" prices could be counterfeits.

Calculate the costs.

Check out websites that offer price comparisons and then, compare "apples to apples." Factor shipping and handling into the total cost of the order. Then, stack these costs against your budget and needs.

Pay by credit or charge card.

Keep a paper trail.

It's time to hop online and enter your niche keywords into Google.

Look over the results and take note of the sites which show up in the regular search listings, as well as the sponsored Adwords results down the right side of the page. Are there a lot of sponsored listings? How relevant are the sites that come up in the regular listings, and are they commercial?

It's often difficult for beginners to distinguish between healthy competition and market saturation. How much is too much?

A certain amount of competition is good. It indicates that the market is robust, people are buying and the niche is profitable.

There are no hard and fast rules here, but there is a useful rule of thumb. You need to weigh your keyword(s) search volume against the number of “hits” or indexed pages reported by Google.

So, for example, if your niche keywords receive an average 500 searches per month, while Google reports that it has indexed 550,000 web pages containing your keywords, you've got some saturation on your hands.

Likewise, what if you find a niche with very few competing web sites or sponsored listings? This might mean you've uncovered an overlooked, underserved niche market.

However, it could also indicate a 'dead market'. No one is advertising or creating commercial sites because people aren't buying.

ITALIAN BANANA DREAM

4 bananas
2 tbsp lemon juice
4 egg yolks
½ can sweetened condensed milk
1 ½ cups sugar
1 ½ pt whipping cream
½ pt whole milk
½ tsp salt
2 tbsp vanilla

This is a dense very flavorful Italian ice cream. This one is so good it might create a new banana growing industry in Italy. The secret to this recipe is to use very ripe bananas. If they are slightly over-ripe, that is even better. Crush bananas and add lemon juice and set aside. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together egg yolks, sweetened condensed milk, sugar, whipping cream and whole milk. Then add salt and vanilla extract. Freeze this mix in an ice cream freezer and when thick add the prepared bananas and continue to freeze. This is best when served very cold. It has extraordinary flavor and "mouthfeel". *If you are concerned about the possibility of Salmonella from uncooked eggs, substitute an equivalent amount of Egg Beaters.
