Personal Magnetism is the individual expression of a subtle irresistible and dynamic _Force_ in man, which enables him to exert an unusual influence upon others. Well, the upshot of it all was that Mr. K. got a severe and stern rebuke from the young mesmerist, who in all truth was a born Yogi and cared not for the petty ways and small thoughts and attainments of men of this world. I find that nearly all modern Western writers on and teachers of this subject are much, in fact solely, taken up with the idea of sensationalism through Occultism, so much so that when a really thoughtful man investigates their writings he feels utterly disgusted, repelled and horrified at the very name of Occultism.

The man who studies Yoga and Occultism simply with a view to develop, display and demonstrate Psychic and Super-normal Powers and _Siddhies_ always ends in _Lust_ and is caught up in a psychic machinery of law and destructive thought forces that effectually grind him to pieces. His spiritual progress is thrown back over ages and he is made to retrace his steps slowly and painfully.

I cannot too strongly condemn the modern tendency to "impress" others, to "strike terror" into others, to "psychologize" others towards the accomplishment of our personal motives. If you are one such, do, for heaven's sake, open your eyes to your gross ignorance and low propensities or be not surprised if one day you find yourself face to face with some powerful scoundrel who would not scruple to crush you in all possible ways. "Harm watch, harm catch." I am going to give you in practical form what constitute the real cause at the back of a "Magnetic" personality--that which when developed makes a god-like man of any human weakling.

The especial province of the mother is the prevention of disease, not its cure. To the establishment and carrying out of this principle, every word contained in the preceding pages has directly or indirectly tended.

This, however, is not all. When disease attacks the child, the mother has then a part to perform, which it is especially important during the epochs of infancy and childhood should be done well. I refer to those duties which constitute the maternal part of the management of disease.

Medical treatment, for its successful issue, is greatly dependent upon a careful, pains-taking, and judicious maternal superintendence. No medical treatment can avail at any time, if directions be only partially carried out, or be negligently attended to; and will most assuredly fail altogether, if counteracted by the erroneous prejudices of ignorant attendants. But to the affections of infancy and childhood, this remark applies with great force; since, at this period, disease is generally so sudden in its assaults, and rapid in its progress, that unless the measures prescribed are rigidly and promptly administered, their exhibition is soon rendered altogether fruitless.

The amount of suffering, too, may be greatly lessened by the thoughtful and discerning attentions of the mother. The wants and necessities of the young child must be anticipated; the fretfulness produced by disease, soothed by kind and affectionate persuasion; and the possibility of the sick and sensitive child being exposed to harsh and ungentle conduct, carefully provided against.

Again, not only is a firm and strict compliance with medical directions in the administration of remedies, of regimen, and general measures, necessary, but an unbiased, faithful, and full report of symptoms to the physician, when he visits his little patient, is of the first importance. An ignorant servant or nurse, unless great caution be exercised by the medical attendant, may, by an unintentional but erroneous report of symptoms, produce a very wrong impression upon his mind, as to the actual state of the disease. His judgment may, as a consequence, be biased in a wrong direction, and the result prove seriously injurious to the welldoing of the patient. The medical man cannot sit hour after hour watching symptoms; hence the great importance of their being faithfully reported. This can alone be done by the mother, or some person equally competent.

Material required: 13/4 to 2 yd. of casement cotton, zephyr, or tobralco, 30 in. wide. At this stage a girl had better make a paper pattern representing half the garment instead of a quarter (fig. 1), as she would not be able to cut through more than two thicknesses of material.

Seams.—French seam would be easy and neat, and could be sewn with No. 30 cotton of contrasting color. (Advanced workers would, of course, machine stitch the seams in a color to match the garment.) Round the curved portion the seams should be rather narrow, to avoid puckering.

Bottom hem — About 11/2 or 2 in. deep. It will have to be eased or pleated in, as it is curved. Before beginning to fold the hem, fold the bottom of the garment with the side seams together, and examine the bottom curve. If it has a bad shape, owing to stretching of the seams, round it off smoothly, having first pinned the two sides together.

Sleev es.—Make hems about 1/2 in. deep, and decorate them to match the other hems.

Neck .—Lay a hem about 1/4 in. deep, or join on a crossway false hem 3/4 to 1 in. deep. All the hems may be decorated with a pattern in tacking stitch, or with some variety of chain or blanket stitch. To give variety of color, or to add to the length of the garment, all the hems might be finished with crossway false hems in the same or a contrasting color. In that case, all the hems would appear on the right side of the garment.

Opening.—If the pinafore is cut rather wide at the neck, it can be made without any opening. If an opening must be made, it should be cut down almost to the waist.

The simplest method of finishing an opening at this stage is by narrow tapering hems with a shaped strengthening tape and a loop and button fastening. This is most suitable for a back opening. For a front opening, Method B, described on pp. 58 and 59, may be used.
